Portfolio Element 1 Animation

First draft

I think it is time to make my own animation as a tribute to the history and it could really be a great way to demonstrate the story to the audience who don’t know the history of Puyi.

1. Medium shot of Puyi’s back standing in front of the Forbidden City (the sky alternates between day and night) Puyi’s clothes and hairstyle change

(The emperor wore a hat and became a short-haired emperor, became a British gentleman, became a prisoner, and became a migrant worker) Reference: Baidu Encyclopedia

Photos of the real Forbidden City available in the Forbidden City

2. Pu Yi, a migrant worker in Dajing, walks up the steps (you can move to the close-up of one foot to the next). Go to the close-up

3. Close-up of a butterfly flying to its ankle or hand (the butterfly spiraling in circles is quite cool. The last one is Puyi’s big face)

4. Big scene: Puyi chases the butterfly and the butterfly penetrates its heart

5. (Good memories black and white) His dad bowed to him

6. (Good memories in black and white) The nurse gave him milk

7. (Good memories black and white color) British gentleman taught him to ride a bicycle

8. (Good memories in black and white) He and his wife waltz

9. Butterflies flew on his collar and he waved goodbye.

9. Red Door Red Door Closed

It had took me ages to finish the animation and the amount of them was as the same as an animation student. After that, I was discussing with Annie about whether loading the SFX into it or not. The reason why I don’t want to put SFX into it because the dynamic works quite well within the symphony and they were quite synchronised (Well, yes, because I create the animation after the music). So they meant to be on the beat.

Then in the later day I was trying realistic sfx to see if it might work. I still believe it sounds better with only instrumental sound. I kind of followed the way the ‘silent film’ does, using instrumental sounds as sound effects, and the initial idea was by Annie.
