Live Installation The Gavel Room (Composer)
A spatial installation, an interactive robot. A physical theatre play.
Description
Art is often seen as a domain of free expression and creativity, particularly with the growing popularity of the international arts community. Artists and students can freely express themselves in this environment, often considered to be “critical,” “politically correct,” and “progressive.” However, this same environment can sometimes lead to a lack of deep critical analysis of art, resulting in shallow and pretentious understandings of both art and reality.
When an artwork is presented to the public, it is inevitably placed within the commercial framework established by capital and media. This framework operates as a form of evaluation, where the public assesses artworks based on cultural standards and critically examines them through the lens of artistic expression and critical thought.
Now, a challenger to the status quo has appeared, trying to defend a charge of arson by laying out the cause of the matter. When the gavel falls, the final verdicts are delivered.

I will always be moved by others’ love and dedication to art. What is craftsmanship? Something could not replaced by AI. Something emotional and bloody.
The composition story is quite long: For his graduation show version, which is a show gonna be live with dancers. I got the chance to compose for this live installation by chance. And it only gave me only 24hours to compose (very last minute thing). The music reference was showing below: Canqi Lin literally just needed a piano composition. It would been good if I have more time. I could record a steinway piano.

The final version of the music in the Polyphonic exhibition was a mixture of my music “Possessed 作茧自缚” and classical music samples blending with electronic textures:
Possessed means falling into a pit of one’s own digging. Surprisingly, it matches with the definition of information cocoon. Sunstain (2006) first proposes the term of information cocoon and defines it as “communication universes in which we hear only what we choose and only what comforts us and pleases us” (Sunstein, 2006, p. 9). I composed this sound track using the same method and ideology of Kleinsche Flasche. I went to the Theo pizza store and to record the fire. I invited Irene, the bassoonist, Billy, the oboist, Lydia, the cellist, Ercun, the violinist, Latte, the saxophonist for an improvisation recording session. I invited holiday who played Chinese erhu and Jiajun Wang who played Chinese suona to play music notes which were especially tailored for the climax. Compared to Kleinsche Flasche, it is a dark ambient composition but still polyphonic and intense.
